NoScript makes FireFox Quantum useless

Post by davon » Fri Jan 26, 2018 3:01 pm

I can't believe no one else has complained for reported this. I need help or else noscript will have to be uninstalled. Noscript with Firefox is worse than useless. Being useless would be an improvement over the current functionality of noscript. Noscript ruins Firefox and makes it useless software! With Noscript installed I can not browse the internet. Period! AT ALL. ANYWHERE! Noscript breaks the entirety of the internet. Every website I visit with Noscript running takes at least 10 minutes to complete loading on the initial visit. This is a consistent number. For everything. Once the site finally loads, everything is usually good for say around 30 minutes or so. You can browse on the site, and open links to new pages. Eventually, whatever is in memory must be forced out, because the site will go right back to taking 10 minutes to load a new link.

This is obviously unacceptable. No one has time to sit around for 10 minutes and wait for a webpage to load! Someone please help! I do not want to browse unprotected, but using Firefox basically means giving up browsing the internet, since it completely prevents me from loading anything in my browser.....

davon,
For what it's worth, I've been using NoScript with Firefox for years and have never experienced what you are describing. It has always done exactly what it promises to do, allow me to control what scripts are run on my machine by web sites.

If you have a problem, & it sounds like you do, you're going to need to provide more information.

Anyhow, as a test, create a new, clean Profile.
Do nothing to it except install NoScript.

Browse the web.
Does it work?

davon, sounds to me like you need to learn how to use NoScript. Your complain sounds exactly as the ones that come from people who get frustrated when they cant learn NoScript in one week. You need to put the time. It takes time to learn NoScript. FWIW, my personal experience is totally the opposite of what you wrote.

I believe you learn how to use NS in less than couple of minutes, if you stop complaining and forget what and how NS 5 did. And start learning with clean install.

This problem sounds and surely is that old NS settings were corrupted before or during uppgrading from 5 to 10. I think that this process is not very good handled by NS.

But nevertheless, NS 10 is much better and easier and more effective than 5 now when those handicaps of first versions are fixed.

About the first sentence you wrote. I would agree with it if you had said, that if you knew how to use NoScript 5, learning NoScript 10 would take a couple of minutes.

But according to what the opening poster wrote, it doesnt sound to me like he used NoScript before. He sounds like a first time NoScript user. And one who expected NoScript to make websites work magically. And thats not how NS works. It has to be learned via trial and error, and it takes a lot of time. In my personal case, it took me about 2 years to move from what I consider a basic Temporarily allow all this page user to become an advanced user.

I have been using NoScript for 9 years. During all this years, I read many times complains that sound pretty much identical to his. When I read one like that, I always try to tell who wrote it that learning NoScript is not easy but it is worth learning. The learning process takes awhile. But once you learn it, is like learning to ride a bicycle, you just keep going. Once NoScript does click in your head, you are pretty much done. When I first started using NoScript, I took a no nonsense approach to it and went with it. And then one day all things started making sense. Never got frustrated or uninstalled NoScript.

So, his problem is not because Settings got corrupted (IMO, and according to what he wrote).

If you know how to use NoScript, and your settings got corrupted, you ll know immediately that something is not right. i have 2 computers right now, in both I waited for NoScript 10 to be released before updating to Firefox 57. In my W10, settings were corrupted during the update. For me, it was easy to fix. I copied my settings from my W7 and replaced the ones in W10, and that did it.

I also like version 10. I cant find anything wrong with it. :)

Really? Because if he is literally describing his problem, it is something entirely different than what beginners usually describe.

It sounds as if something entirely different is interfering with his loading.
Unless you assume that what he meant was that it takes this long to reload the page several times.

I was going to ask a couple of questions, but kept putting it of (partly because of the tone, the other thread about Tor has drained me a bit of my drive to troubleshoot...

If he is on the other hand actually describing loading times, the problem would be a bit deeper though.
Only thing I can realistically think of is that something is trying to redirect his traffic, and it takes a multitude of timeouts till said interference gives up.
In that case NS wouldn't be the root of the problem, but merely pushing a deeper issue to the surface.

But when someone hasn't checked back in 36 hours anyway, why bother writing a complete instruction for checking the typical cases, right?

This chunk sounds like a frustrated first time user:

"Noscript with Firefox is worse than useless. Being useless would be an improvement over the current functionality of noscript. Noscript ruins Firefox and makes it useless software! With Noscript installed I can not browse the internet. Period! AT ALL. ANYWHERE! Noscript breaks the entirety of the internet."

But who knows, I am guessing.

Folks, here's some advice for all of you. When a Mod points out a red flag for trolling, don't make posts that would feed a troll.

If the OP has an actual question and is inclined to adjust his/her tone, therube has already said what there is to be said atm. So let's refrain from posting in this thread again until the OP replies. Thanks.
