lost all site permissions after firefox upgrade

Post by tomvdp » Tue Jan 23, 2018 9:18 pm

I upgraded firefox 56 to 58. That apparently also upgrades NoScript, to 10.1.6.3 in my case. But in doing so, it forgot about all my previous settings. Help... I want all my original site permissions back. Is there an option ? I see there is an import/export button... can I recover the site list from a backup and import it ?

This really takes the fun away. I feel I shouldn't have hit "upgrade" at all.

You would need to export your settings from the old NoScript, and import them into the new NoScript.

Things you'll need -

1) Firefox 56  https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/56.0.2/

2) https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/58.0/releasenotes/ says you can't "just" downgrade from Firefox 58 to Firefox 56. So you need to use Firefox 56 to create a new profile. Before running this new profile in Firefox 56, completely quit all Firefoxes, and then copy your prefs.js into the new profile. This should copy your old NoScript settings.

3) Install NoScript Classic into Firefox 56, and use the Export button *on the very bottom* of NoScript Options.

4) Go back to your main profile and Firefox 58, and import your NoScript settings.

I agree with Tom. I regret updating to Firefox 57 and Noscript 10. Stupid me. I'm not a computer guy, just a user. The solution proposed by Barbaz is effectively unworkable for non-hackers. Shame on the developers for this crucial error and not warning users!

Shame on you for casting blame where it doesn't belong. If this were a universal error, as you are implying, we would have already heard a LOT more about it.

Except that I ain't no hacker either.

Btw, if you're still on Firefox 57 it's not too late to "just" go back to Firefox 56 and NoScript Classic. Just make sure you have automatic Firefox updates disabled:
about:config
set both app.update.auto and app.update.enabled to false
Also make sure you don't have Mozilla Maintenance Service installed

Sure, if you have the backup, you can Import it.

If you dont, then do as barbaz suggested.

Or, do a System restore to before updating to Firefox 57/58, do the backup, upgrade to Firefox 58. If again, your Settings get lost/corrupted during the upgrade, Import the Settings backup you created.

I think that if you have not fully undertood how classic Noscript really worked then your old whitelist may be not in very good condition and so maybe it's better start building NS 10 settings from "clean" reset "factory" settings. Then you probably get the Idea of this new version too. Of course you can use your old list as reference, but my experience is that importing old settings as such cause too much mess.

You really need not be any computer guy to undestand this new NoSript. On the contrary I think that those who think they are are more lost with it.

Thank you for all the answers.

You mean if I have a backup of an export from a Noscript Classic ? I did never export, but I do have backups for my system, so if it is only a particular file to get from the backup and then import, that would be great. I could get the old prefs.js file from the backup, would that help ? (The backup is not fresh enough to dare a complete system restore.)

Au contraire! It took me quite a while to finetune and get all my preferred sites working with the least of scripts. That's why I am so disappointed that my settings were not copied to the new version.

tomvdp, NoScript 5 saved data in prefs but I dont know if getting an old copy and placing it in the profile of Firefox 58 will get your old settings back. I still think your best option is to do a System restore if you have a point that is recent. Or, you can always start from scratch.

Right. But since NS10 supports proper distinction between Https and http filtering, you will have to go through a lot of the rules manually to not just have a bunch of "http AND https" rules, where "https only" is more appropriate.

I understand your disappointment, and for most people that doesn't happen.

At this junction you only have the three options.
1. The one that Barbaz provided. Which is downgrading and using the pref.js that you still have, but that NS10 doesn't use. It doesn't require "pro level knowledge", it just requires you to do what they wrote. No codding, no reactive figuring out.
2. Do what Bo told you. Which is basically the same, but on a system level. (you downgrade FF by restoring the old version basically)
3. Manually adding the rules back. Which DOES have some upsides, specifically because figuring out what you specifically want as rules and defaults and where you want a whole domain allowed and where a specific path including subdomain is also different then before.

So either way you will have to familiarise yourself with the new interface, and finecomb whether the new rules are as you expect them to be, so the question really is whether the downgrading either way is quicker or clicking the couple of scripts you need for your most visited sites.

Ok, thanks all!

I'll spend some time learning the new UI/rules and start from scratch.
