Re: Nightly 57 and NoScript

Giorgio has always been an awesome developer and human being in general. He will bend over backwards to make things forward advanced and also backwards compatible for as long as he can manage it. No one does it better than him, so I suspect he will maintain that to some extent. But at some point, you have to cut some legacy stuff loose and that's why even the platforms don't support them anymore.

Some legacy stuff can be forked and kept alive for a while but eventually its a losing game of severely diminished returns. Especially the more critical stuff that are security or privacy related, although the downloaders and utilities despite being vectors are less likely to be a problem in the short term at least.

Legacy NoScript isn't going away immediately when NoScript WebExtension is released.

Looks like this switch will be available in Nightly 57 and 58, but not in 57 Beta -

Barbaz,

Thanks for the response on setting NS to work in Nightly 57. It is working now.
I appreciate your time and apologize for the delay in responding here.

A second question and by no means a complaint in any way.

It is hard to tell often the reasons for lagging browser response and internet connections are often questionable.

Do you think it's possible Legacy NS may be slowing browser response?

Again, I appreciate everyone's efforts.

Larry

Does disabling NoScript (Tools > Add-ons Manager > NoScript > Disable > Yes, remove ALL protections) speed it up?

This seemed like the right place to pose this question as opposed to starting a new thread [no thread hijacking intended]...

NoScript is my absolute #1 extension (can't live without it), and am very grateful for the MASSIVE effort being put into porting it over to WebEx. What I am wondering is this:

Should I continue to upgrade Firefox to new stable builds as they are released, or should I switch to the ESR? By reading this thread, it seems as though NS will be ready just in time for 57, but I am patient and will wait as long as it takes. I'm just grateful it is being ported (thank the gods that be!). Just looking for some solid advise on this so I can be prepared. Like a lot of people, I suppose I am just a little confused as to how to go about the major change to extensions when Firefox 57 is released.

Thanks!

I don't think there's a "should" here. Personally I would stick with 52 ESR until NoScript Webext is out and had a few releases to work the bigger bugs out. But ideally, as soon as NoScript Webext is out in the dev channel, alongside my 52 ESR I would run a Webext compatible browser with NoScript Webext, to get a sense of what's coming and help with testing.

I suppose you could also just hang on to Firefox 56 stable until NoScript Webext is released to the stable channel. Or run 52 ESR until legacy NoScript is no longer supported.

There are several possibilities and it's impossible for us to say what's right for you.

+1 to having a sticky on this subject. Which other posts do you have in mind?
Bumping this because Firefox 57 has been in beta for a few days now.

No, but that was to be expected given that he has a very hectic and busy schedule porting the code and trying to ensure stability. I will poke him again.

I'm not sure, I've just downloaded the latest release in the beta channel and updated the development version, and they're still on 56b.
However, as soon as they switch to 57 we'll see.
If you meant to bump the "make this sticky" thing, it seems a sensible choice to me, let's do it.

Well, today the first working 57.0b1 DevEdition for windows was built. Candidates 1 and 2 didnt install.

Ofc that's very early. I just had to upload the executables to my antivirus provider because they didnt know the files. But I'm counting the days until the first webext version of NoScript.
