Amazon Assistant vs NoScript

Post by NoScripties » Sat Mar 05, 2016 7:04 pm

Hello,

I have a problem with the Amazon Plugin "Amazon Assistant". You can find it directly on the Firefox Plugin Site for install.
If you do this and no Script is activated the Plugin cant load any content.

if i allow all scripts (unsecure) over NoScript, the Plugin works fine.
So it seems that NoScript blocks something I don't know.

The Homepage of Amazon is allowed in NoScript and every sub sites and so on.
So I wondering what else I need to allow, that the Plugin works.

Can Somebody help me here?

A websearch on the add-on name + noscript + domains results in a usefull hit, but only when viewing it in its cached version.

In the reviewer's post of March, 1st:
“….., However, it is possible to get it working if you are willing to compromise browsing safety and can spend some (probably a lot) of time experimenting with settings.”
=================================================

Now focusing on the experimental aspect to get the add-on functioning:

>> Add 7 domains to noscript's white list
amazon.com
amazonbrowserapp.com
bit-wishlist-us-prod.s3.amazonaws.com
d2sy71lka14dqw.cloudfront.net
d2znhaxijgotb9.cloudfront.net
ssl-images-amazon.com
ubp-ubpclient-us-prod.s3.amazonaws.com

>> Enable "Cascade top document's permissions to 3rd party scripts" in NoScript Options>Advanced(tab)>Trusted(tab).
More info on cascading: FAQ 5.6 + topic 20527.

>> Enable “Accepting third-party cookies (Always) in Firefox. Without it, the assistant's window remains blank.

If you are at ease applying these settings, use them at your own discretion.

So, to make sure I understand this:
The plugin doesn't work on Amazon pages, even with all visible sites whitelisted (the NoScript icon is just a blue S on a plain white background),
but if you enable globally or cascade permissions, then the plugin works?

@Thrawn
Do not know why the plugin isn't working in your case. It shouldn't matter what page you are on.
I tested by creating a new firefox profile with only NS +the assistant installed.
Perhaps following info might help.

In addition to yesterday's post:

After running some tests, it looks like these 2 domains are not required (or no longer required, don't know) for the assistant to function.
amazonbrowserapp.com
bit-wishlist-us-prod.s3.amazonaws.com

It will take a couple of seconds for the installation of the assistant to complete.
Wait for it to complete, you will be automatically directed to Amazon Assistant's firstrun page.

If all conditions are met (whitelisted domains + enabling "Cascade top document's permissions to 3rd party scripts" + accepting third-party cookies in Firefox) the assistant is able to work.

The default Amazon location in the shop assistant is amazon.com (United States).

From within the assistant you can choose from 8 country specific locations: United States, Canada, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, France, China and Japan.

If you wish to use another location or need more than one, add the domain(s) you need (see below) to NoScript's whitelist before using the assistant.

Amazon China is a special case, only 3 domains to whitelist and it seems (after running a few tests) it is not required to enable "Cascade top document's permissions to 3rd party scripts" in NoScript. After starting firefox, then clicking the assist button, I had to wait at least 20 - 30 seconds for the window to load items, can't tell if it's the same for others.

Domains per Amazon (country) location to add to whitelist

:D That was a question. I haven't installed the plugin myself; I was just checking whether I understood you.
