[Invalid] Multiple issues

Post by apollo702 »

I will do my best to phrase this as best as I can. When installing NS into a new PaleMoon a number of things have started happening- all of which are on pages in which they previously worked flawlessly. I have checked other settings, extensions... and it appears that the issues are centered around NS.

Here are some samples:

Tons of pages are missing elements or they they have inoperable buttons. On this very page only the font size dropdown works. the other buttons show- but they don't operate. I can provide many more sample pages if needed.

On pages where all scripts are allowed the sites are behaving as if they are blocked. One example of that behavior is: http://play.typeracer.com/

When experimenting with disabling NS scripts still were blocked.

Is anyone else experiencing behaviors like this? I would greatly appreciate ideas and solutions.

Thank you in advance!

I can confirm the issue. When temporarily toggling to "Enable scripts globally" these problems vanish.

EDIT: On these pages the buttons also are working- and I get my signature ink back - but now the cursor is acting buggy. The pointer loses focus when in the text field. Is there supposed to be a handler in here?

If global allow fixes it, then you should be able to fix it by finding the right combination of sites to allow.

Which sites are on the NS menu?

Create a new, clean Profile, install only NoScript & see if your site works.

Grrrr. Without globally enabling scripts even the quote buttons aren't working. The font size button that I am referring to is the one on this page above the text box. Out of all those buttons only that one is working.

As far as the globally allowed setting I experimented with it more and a pattern is emerging. On many scripts they clearly are not being whitelisted/blacklisted as instructed. They have a setting and frequently they are doing something else. I pulled up countless bookmarks and the pattern was confirmed.

My next step is going to be a new clean profile and see if any of these issues can be replicated. However, there is other evidence of something being off on this computer. I am having trouble with installations of programs in general in the past few weeks. I know of no changes that I could have made that could cause this. I also am not running any commercial AV. Normally I would look for overly aggressive security software as a cause- but in this case it clearly isn't.

I am going to do some experimenting and then report back. If anyone knows anything else in the meantime please fire away.

I have scanned it repeatedly(including with Mbam) and it always comes up empty. I also have run numerous system file checks and those also came up dry- however I don't believe that they are always infallible. I am almost at the point of wiping the drive and completely starting over.

While I conduct my experiments are there any currently known add-ons that conflict with NS? While redoing the setup the add-ons are nearly identical to the last setup- which AFIK have no conflicts.

We're not at that point yet. The issues I've had for which that was the answer are FAR weirder than this or involved system components in some way.

Those in General Troubleshooting Instructions #1 are the main "known" ones, & I've also seen reports where Ghostery conflict with NS... doesn't mean that there aren't others.

Can you please post your list of extensions here in case anything rings a bell?

@apollo702: oh, & if you are REALLY SURE you don't have malware (I'm still skeptical as MBAM doesn't catch everything & is *not* an antivirus), I'd suggest you re-run the PaleMoon installer to see if it installs; if so, would that indicate that PaleMoon is likely to install fine again after being uninstalled?

And what tools did you scan your computer with? If you haven't yet run an antivirus tool, see what ClamWin turns up.

Sorry, I have been pulled away by offline issues. I am going to take some of these suggestions and conduct more experiments and then report back sometime soon if anything jumps out.

I was thinking that if it comes to a complete wipe that I would do a bunch of backups and then on the re-installs increase the number of system restores and see if I can spot a culprit there- again, if it comes to that drastic step. One reason is because I also cannot reinstall Windows 7 nor install 10. This computer is supposed to have 4 OSes 7,8.1, 10 and Linux Mint Cinnamon. So far it is only a theory but I am suspecting that either 8 or a bad Windows update is causing issues systemwide.

Another reason why I say that is a few other programs recently have either failed after installation or suddenly could not reinstall. I tend to not think it is malware because nobody else has access and I follow very strict policies- one of which is religiously configuring every single page with NoScript. I have scanned with several other programs and nothing- not even rootkits came up. Who knows though, anything is possible.

Anwyways, It is late- but I am going to see how much I can get done tonight and report back shortly.

EDIT:

Also, I did look at the known conflict list- but it was from 2009 and I don't use any of those. I will report back with a dump list.

OK, here it is- and at least until recently these all worked in perfect harmony. This list is long- but it has been stable for many years. Every one of them is there for a reason and I have written tutorials on operating all of them. I know them like the back of my hand.

In recent times very few have come or gone(although I do test many out) and no recent changes coincided with any of the recent issues. Naturally, I don't know if the other system issues are related. However, one is sticking out- and that is Ghostery- and it would take a while to explain what it's role is and why it is still in the collection. IDK if it is something in the recent versions- but it will no longer install or operate correctly. One of the things that had been taking up lots of time was I kept going in and trying a bunch of older versions seeing if something went wrong in one of the updates. So far the results are maddeningly inconclusive.

Anyways, here is the list:

Well, I think WOT has been known to cause conflicts with things before, not sure if that's still the case...
about:addons-memory & Stylish wouldn't be it, I use those & don't have this problem (but then again, I've never got around to upgrading my PaleMoon setup to 25.x).

Oh wait, you said this
apollo702 wrote:When experimenting with disabling NS scripts still were blocked.
So something that isn't NoScript is controlling scripts as well.
It's almost certainly not a NoScript issue then.

You have so many extensions that testing disabling/enabling all of them could take several days...
As suggested above, please try a clean profile with only NoScript installed.

Oh, & you might check your prefs.js for capability.policy prefs (IIRC they won't show up in about:config)
The maonoscript ones are NS related, & there might be some "default" ones, but are there any others?
