[Invalid] Facebook video doesn't play

Post by Glenn »

I keep getting recommendations for NoScript, so I decided to try it, downloaded and installed it today. Maybe this is a newbie question, as I did find references on the forum when I searched for "facebook video", but they seemed irrelevant and old.

I discovered that when I try to play a photographer friend's video that it is blocked (good) but then when I click either the icon in the middle or the one on the top left of the video area, that the area turns black, and there are no further controls.

Do I need to configure something? I did see in the FAQ the sites I should allow to make facebook work, and did allow those, but it didn't help this problem.

Try manually reloading the page after confirming the Temp-Allow of the blocked object?

Recently I've been unable to view some facebook videos even after selecting "temporarily allow all this page". I'm using Firefox for Win7. I also check Adblock Plus. I have a plugin for Shockwave Flash. What am I missing.?

Example - all I see is a black screen.

Edit: I tried the dev. build but no difference. https://noscript.net/getit#devel

I can't go to that link myself because I have blocked access to Facebook... can someone else check it please?

@PDQ: please Temporarily allow all this page repeatedly until there are no more scripts left to allow, and make sure there is nothing in Untrusted. Does it work then? (probably it won't, but it's worth a shot)
If it works, please Forbid one site at a time until you find all the (new?) dependencies, and let us know what they are in case something needs to be done with surrogates.
If not, when it fails, do you see anything related in the Browser Console? (Ctrl-Shift-J)
(if you don't know what's related, turn off CSS warnings and post everything else you see)

Let us know, thanks.

I did that first. Rt-click on the video shows Adobe flash options. Also checked youtube which is fine.

I looked at other addons, but was hoping someone else sees the video, so I would know if I need to do the tiresome testing. I have quite a few. Note the latest dev version of noscript. <sigh>

The next step would be to try it with all addons disabled except NoScript... but let's wait a day or so on that for see if anyone else can get the video working.

A new firefox profile without any addons didn't help (plays youtube embedded videos but not facebook videos). I tried Internet Explorer 32-bit and it failed too. Just a black screen. Uninstalled flash from both browsers and reinstalled both. No change. So weird! Running out of ideas and too tired to continue.

Then this issue is not related to NoScript, it's a problem on their end.

Thanks for your time helping me check this out, barbaz. I have posted on twitter and facebook in hope that I am not the only person that suddenly cannot view facebook videos.

It would be nice if you could please post a link to that here for others who may be hitting the same problem and end up here after searching, thanks.

Great news - I solved the problem and needed to end the "story". Flash seemed a likely suspect, so I searched their site and found this help. I did everything suggested and the videos suddenly started working! I had upgraded flash to version 17.0.0.169 but never made the connection.

Thank the gods for forums. I always find weird problems can be fixed faster if you bounce the problem off others, who then say things that trigger ideas that lead to the answer. I've done this many times as I'm good at breaking software. ;) Thanks again.

I did everything suggested
So you don't know just which particular step fixed things for you?
bounce the problem off others
My father does that with me all the time.
