Unrecoverable error: file ____ cannot be written

Post by that guy who plays in bands »

I've been trying to figure out what is wrong with my desktop PC in relation to flashgot. I'm running the most recent version of Firefox (47.0), I've tried the direct version of Flashgot (V. 1.5.6.13) as well as the development version (V. 1.5.6.13RC1). My laptop does just fine. The laptop runs off Windows 7 Home, the desktop is running Windows 8.1 Embedded industry pro. Every time I try to download a video, be it youtube or another flash site, I get "Unrecoverable error: file
C:\Users\Jim G\Downloads\School_of_Djent.webm cannot be written!" I've cleared my cookies/web history, I've checked to see if something's up with the registry....I just get the same style error over and over again.

Thanks for reading...

Is the message exactly as written?

Is there a space between the word file & the C, "file C:\" ?

What download manager are you using?
And if you change to browser-builtin?

Do you have sufficient permissions for \Jim G\Downloads?
If you select a different download directory, like C:\TMP\Jim (create it first)?

No downloads at all work or only from certain sites?
If you bypass FlashGot & download direct through the browser, does that work?

Sorry, I tried to format the error in the OP.
"Unrecoverable error: file
C:\Users\Jim G\Downloads\School_of_Djent.webm
cannot be written!"
Is exactly how the error shows.

In the Flashgot Media and General settings, I am using the default browser built in settings. I don't run any other download managers in my firefox.

My downloads folder for some reason keeps resetting itself to "read-only" but I do have all permissions available for the folder in the PC as I am the administrator.

After plenty of attempts I tried changing the save directory to another drive but the identical error
"Unrecoverable error: file
C:\Users\Jim G\Downloads\School_of_Djent.webm
cannot be written!" appears.

I created a new folder called "E:\videos" and set that as the new directory and restarted the browser.....I expected to find nothing but I found this folder with the name "E:\videos\flashgot.dkaj58h1.default", and inside that, a flashgot.exe.test file.

Opened up with notepad:
"FlashGot Win Bridge 1.4.1.2

It's affecting youtube, I tried a random video off www.theonion.com, then IGN, and got the same sort of errors:

Unrecoverable error: file
C:\Users\Jim G\Downloads\O_SPAN_Classic_CIA_Accidentally_Overthrows_Costa_Rica_640.mp4
cannot be written!

Unrecoverable error: file

cannot be written!

The only thing I can really point to is regardless of directory, Flashgot seems to be trying to pull from C: ?

I'm sorry, what do you mean direct from the browser? I've just been (trying) to use flashgot. For kicks I tried using another flash downloader, Flash and Video Download, which does the job good enough, but I like flashgot because it rarely finds flash media that it can't download....But this problem is persistent for me!
Thanks for getting back to me.

FlashGot | Options | Advanced -> Temporary Directory

Sounds like that is being set to E:\Videos.

But why - unless you're redirecting %TMP% or setting the location specifically?
More typical would be a place like: C:\Users\Jim G\\AppData\Local\Temp

Finally realized what you meant; I never go into that selection filter/destination folder selection screen. Selected a different folder, back to the original Download directory, and videos download! I was right clicking and selecting a file, which was generating the error. Odd, but good to see what wasn't working.
