Firefox 3.0.11, 3.0.12pre freeze on java.com

Post by Alan Baxter » Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:19 pm

Bug introduced in version 3.0.11 of Firefox. I hadn't noticed it because I usually have the Java plug-in blocked by NoScript.
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... &t=1293885
On my PC with XP Pro SP3, FF 3.0.10 does not freeze on java.com anywhere. After using "Check for Updates..." to upgrade FF to 3.0.11, FF freezes with any of the following scenarios:
1. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
2. Go to http://www.java.com, click on "Downloads" at the top of the page.
3. Go to http://www.java.com, click on "Help Center" at the top of the page.
4. Go to http://www.java.com, click on "Do I have Java?" in the center of the page.

20090614-17:50UTC Update:
I've just added a new comment to the bug I filed with Mozilla.
It looks like it's probably a JavaScript problem rather than a Java one. If I
disable JavaScript with Tools > Options, then the freeze does not occur on the
URL I supplied. Instead, the web page displays a message that JavaScript must
be enabled. None of the Java testing sites I've gone to indicate any problem.
I'm editing the bug title to reflect that it appears to be the site that's
freezing Firefox 3.0.11 and Firefox 3.0.12pre on Windows XP, not Java.

Hi Alan,
Noticed this heads-up before I went to get the latest Java.

Couldn't reproduce with Update 13 running in current Fx with Java QS extension disabled.

Used Java console to get Update 14.
This left the port to the java update site open after the Java installer reported success. I couldn't be fagged to find where the extra bits were getting sent, since it was running at dialup speed and the process reporter I use wasn't flagging any no-go zones. I guessed it was extra stuff for Fx.
Firing up Fx and it announced a new extension install. This system has the Java QS extension disabled, so I guess the Update modified that - but it left it apparently disabled.

Returned to the test page for your bug and still couldn't reproduce. All of the links run as expected.
I did note that the original page reports the "oops, you don't have the recommended java installed" in error. I verified the install of Update 14 via the http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml by restarting Fx with java blocked again and had the correct version of java reported after explicitly allowing the test applet through the NS placeholder.
The original test page
http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/win ... de_xpi.jsp
was still reporting that this sytem had the wrong java version.
I note that with Java blocked or with it allowed, the page behaved exactly the same.
Did you notice the blocked object "npruntime-scriptable-plugin;DeploymentToolkit"? I couldn't find a placeholder. I didn't allow it with Java blocked, or with Java allowed - mainly because I don't trust Sun/Java to do things logically or ethically. They've invented another kind of active content, perhaps? Thanks to NS I don't have to find out the laborious way.

There are no other Java sites that I use any more, so can't test otherwise. I've had Java up to here a long time ago.

Thank you for checking this out, Nan. I've opened Bug 498132. One of the Mozilla team members is having trouble confirming it too. Five other users confirm this problem in the Mozillazine topic I linked in my original post, but none of them have confirmed it in bugzilla yet.

No. All of my testing has been done in a brand-new profile with no extensions. I have Java Quick Starter unticked in the Java Control Panel > Advanced > Miscellaneous. I never see it appear as an installed extension in Add-ons, disabled or otherwise.

Had a few minutes again just now waiting for a job to complete.
So opened new profile with QS extension disabled (I leave it there for visiting users who may like it to run for their purposes) and the latest xpi. NS that I had on the desktop - I don't think the NS version is critical here from my reading of the mozilla thread. NS 1.9.3.92

And I think I would lean towards agreeing with the opinion that Java's not involved.
Scripting most certainly is though.

Using the first example link - I tried another of the list in your OP to confirm, but only did the full set of tests reported here on the first link.
Java enabled via unchecking 'forbid Java', java.com untrusted - - gets you as far as getting the page rendered with apparently all information.
As above, toggle java.com to temp allow. Reloads and stalls before NS yellow activity bar can render fully - or is it being obscured by something?
As above, java.com whitelisted manually. Doesn't even get to render page before stalling. Gives pre-rendering typical text.
As above, Java forbidden. All the same results as with Java enabled.

Some kind of active content really wants to run, doesn't it?

EDIT: Just noticed that this thread doesn't want to complete loading from informaction.com. This connection is being managed by a 56K modem - but I would've thought a minute is rather over-long even for images? Have we arrived at Fx 3.0.x meltdown? :-)

That seems to happen often on forums.informaction.com. I don't bother waiting for it to show "Done" in the status bar anymore.
