[Resolved] FlashGot media button can't be moved?

Post by DaKo1989 »

Hi,

since the last update to FlashGot 1.4.5 I've got the following problem: When I move the FlashGot media button (which appears on site like YouTube etc. for downloading the video) to another place it works during this session. But when I restart Firefox the button is at its default place (next to the url bar where the other buttons are) again. Is this a bug or an intended behaviour?

I also tried it with a portable version of Firefox and a new profile, it shows the same behaviour. It seems that this was introduced in 1.4.5. Is this a bug?

Strange, it seems to work for me.
Does it happen on a clean profile with just FlashGot?

I made a few additional tests with FlashGot 1.4.5 and 1.4.4 using new profiles (for each) and Firefox 12.0. Both versions show almost the same behaviour, except for one thing: when moving the button to the add-ons bar at the bottom, FlashGot 1.4.4 saves the position (as I want it) even after a restart of Firefox. FlashGot 1.4.5 doesn't save it and places the button next to the other buttons again after a restart of Firefox. I made a small video with both versions of FlashGot:

http://youtu.be/Dx9iR7a8Q6M

At 0:30 you can see the behaviour of FlashGot 1.4.5 when moving the button to the add-ons bar, at 1:27 you can see the same with FlashGot 1.4.4 (the video also shows all other possibilities for moving the button).

Apart from that it seems that removing the button completely has never worked (I wasn't sure about that because I always placed the button at the add-ons bar). However, FlashGot saves the position when moving the button within the buttons bar (I also wasn't sure about that before). It would be nice to have the old behaviour (being able to move the button to the add-ons bar) back.

I hope this helps.

WFM, http://v6.tinypic.com/player.swf?file=2ag7q8n&s=6.

In your Profile directory, you'll find the file, localstore.rdf.
Search localstore.rdf for "addon".
You should find something like:

Code: Select all

  <RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://browser/content/browser.xul#addon-bar"
                   collapsed="false"
                   currentset="addonbar-closebutton,flashgot-media-tbb,spring,status-bar" />
With 1.45, drag the icon to the addon bar.
Wait a moment or two.
View the localstore.rdf file.
Observe that it shows similar to above.
(If it does not, refresh the view a time or two.)

Close FF.

View the localstore.rdf file.
Does that "addon" section show the same, or has it changed?

Restart FF.
(at that point, I'll assume the icon is no longer on the addon bar - for you)

View the localstore.rdf file.
Does that "addon" section show the same, or has it changed?

(It is not unexpected if the physical layout of localstore.rdf changes.)

Ok, I examined the file during the use of FlashGot 1.4.5 and 1.4.4. The result: with both versions (and all possible positions for the button) the appropriate section in the file shows the same. However, I made an interesting discovery with FlashGot 1.4.5: when the add-on bar is set to stay visible and I move the button there, the button stays there even after a reboot (the add-on bar ist still set to be visible). When I hide the add-on bar and restart Firefox, the FlashGot button is again next to other buttons. However, localstore.rdf still says that the button is located in the add-on bar (even after a few restarts; Firefox writes to that file, but the appropriate section is still the same). This is all pretty strange, but with FlashGot 1.4.4 everything works like it should. So I think there maybe has been a change between those two versions which causes this problem.

This is the intended behavior.
If the add-on bar is found to be hidden, FlashGot moves the media icon on the navigation bar. The reason is quite simple: on Firefox 3.6 and below, the FlashGot media icon lived in the status bar. Therefore the default position for it is in the add-on bar. However, if the add-on bar is hidden (which is the default since Firefox 4) and you upgraded from Firefox 3.6, you'd believe FlashGot Media suddenly stopped working.
This is the reason why in such a (very common) circumstance, the FlashGot Media icon is automatically restored to the navigation bar.

BTW, what are you trying to do exactly? If you keep the add-on bar hidden, why do you want the FlashGot Media icon to go there?

Thanks for your answer, this explains everything. But why does FlashGot 1.4.4 allow you to move the button to the add-on bar and let it stay there even if the add-on bar is set to be not visible and FlashGot 1.4.5 doesn't? I mean I can get used to the behaviour, but I liked to be able to open the add-on bar (with the FlashGot button) only when I wanted to download a video and not to have the button appearing every time visiting a video site.

The new, more aggressive, behavior was introduced after lots of "Where' FlashGot Media gone" reports have been issued by users being forcibly upgraded from Fx 3.6 to Fx 12 last month.

Hi, I found this thread when I searched about the same problem.
I understand you moved the Media icon to the Address Bar to avoid confusion but if the user manually moves it to the Add-On Bar they won't be asking where it is.
All my add-ons live on the Add-On Bar because that is what it is for, I don't need to see them all day, every day and unhiding the Add-On Bar when necessary is simple.
Also, I use a NetBook and space is important, my Navigation Toolbar is already filled up with Bookmarks (so I don't need to use the Bookmarks Toolbar) and using the Add-On Bar hide/unhide gives me some extra screen space as well.
Please allow us to put the Media icon on the Add-On Bar permanently if we want to.
Thanks in advance :)

See if this is resolved in FlashGot 1.4.6.

Thanks for the link :)
I downloaded and installed 1.4.6 restarted FireFox but it still showed 1.4.5 in the Add-Ons Tab so I downloaded and installed and restarted FireFox again but it still shows 1.4.5
Maybe that's because it's not a final release?

I tested it anyway
If the Add-On Bar is not hidden and I close FireFox then the Media icon will stick to the Add-On Bar
If the Add-On Bar is hidden (this is normal for me) and I close FireFox then the Media icon will go back to the Navigation Toolbar. This happens even if I raise the Add-On Bar (not hidden) before the Media icon is exposed

If it says 1.4.5 it's because it is 1.4.5.
Please use the direct link (NOT the green button) from http://flashgot.net/getit#direct because 1.4.6 is not published yet on AMO.

Version 1.4.6 is the solution, the Media icon now sticks to the Add-On Bar.
Thanks so much for your time and effort :)

(Sorry about that. Hadn't realized that AMO wasn't updated.)
