Popup Blocker Issue.

Post by mouse_the »

I think I just stumbled across my first NoScript bug, after using it happily for longer than I can remember.

I am running a stripped (nLited) version of WinXP.
I have stripped my browser down to FF3.5, Mozilla default plugin and NoScript 1.9.5.73
I have enabled scripts globally.
I have a popup blocker exception for "bluehost.com".
I have options/content/block popup windows unchecked.

If I go into my bluehost account's web based file manager I can edit files. It uses OnClick to start a web text editor in a new tab.

I can edit 20 files just fine.
On the 21st file I start getting a notification "FireFox prevented this site from opening" x "popup windows".

If I disable NoScript I can open at least 64...

I have not looked for another site that does this (it's a bit of a pain to test), but I can if needed.

Thanks for all the hard work!

(Your description sounds similar to the <resolved> 1.9.5 kills Snap Links Plus issue. Wait a minute. Was it that, or was it ... please help to reproduce Firefox 3+ bug 460880. Maybe a combination of both.)

I think my symptoms are unrelated to those 2 topics. I may not have been clear enough.

When I have NoScript running I can open a popup file editor, edit my file and close the popup window (or tab) 20 times. On my 21st attempt FireFox blocks the popup (even though the popup blocker is disabled!)

Without Noscript running I successfully opened and closed the editor 64 times (and I got bored.)

How about this one <unresolved>, Firefox 3.0.11 pop-up permission issue.
(Note: they had the problem with FF3.0 & did not test FF3.5.)

When the popups stop, does Error Console show anything of note?

Once you've logged into bluehost, where do you go, what do you do, to get to this editor?

Ahhh, that's the one. I guess I did not search for "pop-up", just "popup" and a few other variations.

For me it is very repeatable. I can always open the editor 20 times, but not 21. The site may use the same popup technique once before that, but I think the number of allowed popups is right around 20. I also comfirmed it on ff3.0.11/NS1.9.5.

I went through some popup blocker testing sites but I did not find one that shows my symptoms. I took a quick look though the javascript on bluehost, but I'm not familiar with js and it looks like they made it hard to read on purpose. (I'm ok with python, I like my whitespace...) It is the "cPanel" site administration interface, I think I have seen other hosting services using it. Looks like it is cPanel Pro 1.0 rc1

For me it is not a big problem, I assumed it was an old bug and I just never opened enough of the wrong popups to trigger it. It sure is strange, though...
