Are you by any chance running a custom theme? Have you tried to customize the toolbar, remove the icon, save and then put it back again. See if that fixes it, it might just be a painting issue, can't reproduce.

But that shouldn't be it, should it?

Looks like all "small icons" does is to change the padding around the objects.
(SeaMonkey is different in that respect in that it does actually have different sized icons.)
It should not have caused the icon to be squished to begin with?

Now in FF 22 they did, "Firefox now follows display scaling options to render text larger on high-res displays" & that caused a lot of cries from people who in the past typically set Windows to use "larger" then normal text size (DPI).

I honestly couldn't reproduce it but I didn't change the icon size either, so I admit that. However, as therube mentioned, that shouldn't matter. I created a profile with regular size, just fine, small size, just fine. I am not sure why its giving you problems. This sometimes happens on Linux but by best estimates, you are on Windows, so not sure what's wrong. Have you tried moving it away from the navigation buttons to the other side and see if that changes anything? It might be that combined icon thing they are doing that is affecting it where it is right now. Just thinking out loud.

I will ask Giorgio to take a look. It might be the way they are rendering icons in the recent versions that is causing it. Perhaps they have adjusted the standard DPI and its conflicting with NS icons, it happens in desktop application development sometimes too.

Icons are 16x16 px, but it doesn't show DPI.
So maybe they should be DPI aware?

@Hecuba's daughter, what OS & what DPI do you have Windows running at?

(Supposedly Win8 defaults to 125% DPI ? Actually it looks to depend on a particular monitor's physical DPI. Is it any wonder there have been all these problems since FF changed.)

You are welcome, I just wish I could have done more. I did however ask Giorgio to look into it as I promised.

FWIW:
Took a wild guess at the cause, and can confirm the behavior in Pale Moon even with the NS icon just in the addon bar.
The workaround: NoScript Options -> General -> CHECK "Open permissions menu when mouse hovers over NoScript icon".

Understood already, thanks - per my OP
Hecuba's daughter wrote:I am aware that it's only like this because of my configuration to manipulate permissions via click, not hover, fly-down menu.
Sorry I missed that, and actually I spaced checking something else - it's the combination of that setting and "Left clicking on NoScript toolbar button toggles permissions for current top-level site" that squashes the icon.

Anyway, here's the problem: With the above settings, the NoScript toolbar icon anonymous node gets the attribute "flex=1", which causes it to be squashed whenever all the space of the toolbar it's on is occupied with other stuff. I'm certain Giorgio can work around that.

That's pretty much my setup now also, I'm only using Pale Moon because I'm looking into whether it will allow me to finally retire Firefox 17 ESR. (Upgrading Fx is out of the question.)
