It stopped working again, and then with the latest update of palemoon - it worked again. There's a notice in the release notes about a script engine bug...

it appears to be something facebook has been fiddling with. It's working fine today

Shame it's not being worked on though

allowing scripts globally doesn't work (nor does running in a private window, which I saw as a workround to a vaguely similar problem in another thread). I've tried clearing cookies and cached information as well.

Over the past few days, something has changed in messenger and now, even with the latest 'classic' noscript (5.1.9), if I log into messenger, I get a blank tab and then palemoon (28.16.0 64 bit) hangs and I have to restart. I currently have to have noscript disabled in order to get onto messenge...
