^ Fine, if it helps you segregate by Firefox version. But there's nothing mixed-up in this thread vis-à-vis the symptoms: the symptoms are identical for all versions of Firefox mentioned here. Hopefully that will help point to what changed between 5.1.0rc1 and 5.1.0rc2 that's the culprit for all of us.

This thread is getting quite mixed up, since we've got a main reported on Firefox 48 and new reports from Firefox 56.
Please continue the Firefox 56-related discussion here, thank you.

I have this issue as well, in 5.1.2. If I downgrade back to 5.1.1 the problem goes away and I cannot recreate it. If I upgrade again to 5.1.2 the issue immediately returns.

disapearing icon

by mellpell » Thu Oct 12, 2017 3:53 pm

I'm using NoScript 5.1.1 on firefox 56.0. I see the same missing icon and consequent inability to use NoScript. I see the icon in some windows but not all. For instance this window does not permit me to allow scripts. As a consequence I am not able to upload a screen shot to show you the problem. It looks the same as the issue therube is having. Let me know if you need any troubleshooting information.

I'd just like to add to the record that I'm running waterfox 55.2.1 as well as the latest firefox, and NoScript 5.1.1 and I am having the exact same issue. The first Window to open has the no script icon, everything else does not, which renders my browser fairly unusable, which sucks because it means to get things to work I have to disable noscript, which I do not enjoy doing.

Re: NoScript 5.1.0rc2 through 5.1.2rc3 disappear

Two observations:

1) The symptoms meticulously described by therube correspond to mine described throughout this thread with Firefox 48.0.2, beginning with NoScript 5.1.0rc2, including the appearance of what's left in NoScript's spot in my toolbar after it disappears, shown in his image two posts above. (I reverted back to NoScript 5.0.10 and set it not to update, after my last comments earlier about 5.1.2rc3.)

2) I suppose I should be pleased that we now know that the disappearings (can) also occur with up to Firefox 56, because (my guess is that) when this gets fixed, it very well may also get fixed in Firefox 48.0.2, which keeps me alive and well in macOS Snow Leopard.... However, I strongly suspect that therube and I share something else in common, but it's rare — otherwise, I'd think that this thread would be barraged with the same complaints by everybody else screaming bloody murder. Accordingly, as a start, here is a dump of my Add-on Extensions for therube to peruse, with a view toward finding one we have in common that might be triggering our presumably rare (?) post-NoScript 5.1.0rc1 disappearing act:

memo: I suspect a possible Extension trigger because, as I said in a post above:
But now there's a curiosity that's got me bewildered: the additional third disappearance of the NoScript entry from the Mac Firefox menu bar Tools menu that began also with 5.1.0rc2 has continued after my downgrade to 5.0.10!!... I conjecture that whatever changed in 5.1.0rc2 that broke the appearance of NoScript in the Firefox 48.0.2 toolbar & contextual menu might have left lingering damage that now affects earlier versions before the problem began.
- -
Edit: Woops, I forgot: it can't be triggered by an extension, because the disappearing act happens for me in a fresh new profile, too.

5.1.2rc6...

At the least, I'm seeing shortcut key, while does change the NoScript icon, is not refreshing the page, so what on the page I'd be expecting to see, or do, is not happening.

Shortcut key "changes" seem to be spamming Error Console.

Code: Select all

NoScript preferences backup on the WebExtension side legacy.js:19:11
I expected changes made from the NoScript icon (rather then shortcut key) to react as expected, but even that is not happening.

(And just to think, we haven't even hit 57 yet!)

Re: NoScript 5.1.0rc2 through 5.1.2rc3 disappear

by therube » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:33 am

Another manual restart... same deal.
Shortcut key is dead.

So now disable all extensions, then re-enable (stand by)...
Disable
Restart
Enable
Restart (some extensions are Legacy & not restartless)

and shortcut key is still not working

Revert to 5.1.2rc3... restartless

Shortcut key is still dead.

Manual restart...

Shortcut key is still dead.

Sigh.

Disable all extension except for NoScript.

Shortcut key works.

Re-enable all the rest of the extensions & restart.

No shortcut key.

All had been working - until the install of 5.1.2rc4.
Now can't seem to get things back to a workable state again.

This must be the missing/ineffectual NoScript (5.1.2rc3) icon:

Image

Not all windows are missing the icon.
Not all windows are affected by the ineffectual shortcut key.

(I think I'm having another Deja vu moment.)
(This is soooo much better, Déjà vu.)

Oh, & I've now run into Taskbar Icons are Reordered when open from Session Restore - with FF.

(I think I've spammed this thread enough.)

Re: NoScript 5.1.0rc2 through 5.1.2rc3 disappear

by therube » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:25 am

And with a manual restart...

shortcut key is ineffectual and the NoScript icon no longer reflects any (supposed) change

A change from the NoScript icon itself (like Temporarily Allow a domain) does work.

So maybe its "just' the shortcut key that's gone awol.

Probably spamming the Error Console.

Code: Select all

NoScript could not disable scripts for system global [System Principal] WinScript.js:13:11
(This FF style Error Console really sucks, IMO.)

Re: NoScript 5.1.0rc2 through 5.1.2rc3 disappear

by therube » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:22 am

Adding NoScript 5.1.2rc4 ...

brought the icon back
brought the context menu back

shortcut key (Ctrl+Shift+\) is reflected in the NoScript icon, but no page refresh results, so the allow (or disallow) is ineffectual - kind of

a manual page refresh is required

FF 56.0 x64

This was... nothing more then opening earlier session from Session Restore (defaults to do that). At that point, no updates, changes had occurred.

Now with 5.1.2rc4, nothing more then a (restartless) install of the new #dev version.

(I haven't read through here, but I'll chime in...)

> Got automatically updated to NoScript xxx

No update, simply opened browser.
NoScript was there yesterday, not there today.

> NoScript disappeared from my Status Bar, from the menu bar Tools menu and from my Contextual menu

Ditto.

> Add-ons Manager shows it loaded and active

Ditto.
Error Console also notes some NoScript Actions.
Shortcut keys are ineffectual.
Presumably NoScript is there & working, "simply" unable to effect changes in it (like to allow a site ;-)).

^ Agreed; anxiously awaiting "Linux on the Desktop." ;) Meaning when the multitude of Mac apps will run on it, or at least when a multitude of the same kind of apps will run on it. Meaning apps with the same consistent #UX #UI #uxdesign #uxdesigner #GUI #MacHumanInterfaceGuidelines #fuckFocusGroups #usabilityTestingBaby. What we need is the equivalent of the Wine libraries for Mac apps under Linux — then I'd jump ship so fast it'd make TheWormyFruit's™ head spin!

(And the decline actually began with 10.7, when Apple tried to remove Save As...)

I'm pleased that you're an actual Mac user, so at least you "get it." But my fear is that Giorgio may not be, and won't grasp the significance of the 10.6 milestone in the history of computing, and won't appreciate the responsibility for the prominent role NoScript plays in maintaining what is not just another "legacy" OS, but instead the state-of-the-art.

Abide what?

Let me be clear, I agree with you about Mac OS. Snow Leopard is undisputably awesome. 10.8 "Mountain Lion" and up clearly show the decline of Mac OS, IMO.

That's why, two years ago now, when my must-have software dropped support for my version of Mac OS, I dropped Mac OS almost entirely.

Now, I'm not suggesting you drop Snow Leopard. I realise that it may not be possible for you, and you probably don't want to anyway (well, I wouldn't in your situation :) ). But you might find some Linux distributions worth a look, either in virtual machine (safer if you have sufficiently powerful hardware) or as a dual-boot (this is more or less what I do now, although I almost never boot Mac OS anymore).

I personally prefer Ubuntu (more specifically, Xubuntu). But there's a whole world of Linux distributions out there. Explore it and enjoy the latest and greatest again. :)

I've had Macs since 1985. Macs aren't Macs any more. Why do you abide it now, when once you didn't?

I notice you keep repeating that sentiment, as if you think your only choice is running the best version of Mac OS or running the latest Mac OS.

I, too, once thought as you did.
