At my wits end - Flash plugin crashes

Post by mikep1655 »

A search here seems to show that nobody else has ever had this problem.

When I enable NoScript, I experience my Flash plugin crashing several times a day. It happens with YouTube, it happens with games (e.g. bubbleshooter), it happens, basically, with any and every site which uses Flash. It happens with my employer's intranet.

I'm not saying it happens every time I visit a page with Flash, but given its prevalence on the web, my "several times a day" is not an exaggeration.

I am pretty sure it is related to NoScript, because I tried disabling it, and for the week or two I ran without it I did not experience any plugin crashes. As soon as I turned it back on, I started getting them again.

The plugin "click to restart" has never, ever, not once worked. Once crashed, it stays crashed for all sites, all new tabs, even new windows. The only fix is to restart Firefox. Fortunately terminating the process and then restarting, so that I get my tabs all restored, works, but it is a right PITA do have to do this over and over again, day after day after day.

Any suggestions on where I can begin to look would be welcome.

Do you get FF crash reports?
Have you submitted them?
What are their URLs?

What version of Flash?

I had this same issue a year ago but it hadn't occurred to me that NoScript was the real culprit. Here's what mitigated the problem for me:
1) Updating Firefox
2) Either update Flash to the latest version, or if you're already running the latest version, downgrade Flash to the latest available version of Flash 11.2. (Downgrading Flash poses a big potential security risk and not recommended if avoidable).

That was enough to eliminate Flash crashes except when Flash had to download a lot of data in short order.

Also, I'm running SeaMonkey 2.21 now and so far my Flash has been crash-free, even when it has to download a large data...
EDIT 20131009: I think Flash crashed today again when downloading a large file. But it's definitely crashing a lot less than it was.

*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Firefox doesn't crash - it carries on running quite happily, and everything is fine, apart from no more Flash.

I have clicked the Send Crash Report button so many times I have lost count. It must be in the high tens, possibly into the hundreds.

What are their URLs?
This is the one I just submitted:

What version of Flash?

I was on 23.0.1 - just gone to 24.0, but I don't expect that to do anything - this problem has been long running, and I will at various times have been on the latest version.

It also used to happen when I was using ESR.

Downgrading to a lower version of Flash would be one thing to try.
