Re: bizarre -- noscript kills gnome!

Upgraded to 10.04 (Lolly Legs) from 9.10 (Kevin Kavanagh) via Synaptic Package Manager managed path.
Applied auto updates via Update Manager managed path.
Gnome 2.30.0, dist:Ubuntu
Build: 31/03/10
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-22 generic
No auto update to xserver-xorg-core showing in Official packages yet.

Default Ubuntu Firefox extension
NS latest AMO 1.9.9.74
A few others with taskbar real estate that I mouse with fairly often.

Can't reproduce the desktop crash after a few hours browsing.
Tried keystroke NS menu invocation as well as mousing plus a couple of other extensions keystroke use. No problems.

Some Gnome settings are flaky however, and it looks as though there are going to be the usual heaps of bugs to track down.
So what? It's free and fun :-)

Thanks for NS as usual.

Also, I think we might be wearing out our welcome in NS forums for Gnome support.
The ubuntu desktop forum is very helpful and has a lot of readers ready to help.
Yes, my apologies for being OT.
Thanks for your help and explanations.

Am I correct in assuming that these were sub-components of the xorg-server package?

Also If I was to uninstall these using Synaptic, would I simply be removing a patch and returning
to the original release of Lucid - or would I be removing a vital component which would render
my system inoperable?
This kind of server patching is a particular case of the more general ppa case. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.
In the general case of ppas, where packages in the ppa are self-contained and can be added and subtracted by novice users, without affecting the desktop operation, you can go ahead and uninstall at will.
But this is a pretty heavy lifting kind of patch and if you wanted to revert to the default lucid install, you would have to do a little bit more than just removing and adding back. The patch is applied by the maintainer. They know what parts of the source are in the compile and, as I said upthread, go to them if you need to revert to the default install of xserver.
But you shouldn't need to for the life of the patch. If you do get more problems with your desktop environment, then the bug hunt is on again.
You haven't got any problems, then forget about reverting unless the next bug chase says you have to: more likely if this purple patch works out buggy, then there will just be another one to patch over the patch. etc etc. The maintainer has a good rep.
If it aint broke now, don't fix it :-)

Thanks for your help.
The ppa does indeed show me that the package is xorg-server..2:1.7.6-2ubuntu8~lp539772.

However Synaptic installed two packages titled xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core,
both with the version number shown above.

Am I correct in assuming that these were sub-components of the xorg-server package?

Also If I was to uninstall these using Synaptic, would I simply be removing a patch and returning
to the original release of Lucid - or would I be removing a vital component which would render
my system inoperable?

The patch's automatically given you a version of xorg-server -- 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu8~ lp539772 with the bug id on it. The maintainer is in the XOrg triage group so you shouldn't have to lift a finger from now on for this bug. Check out the ppa "view package details" link for any ppa always to find the name of packages that are in the ppa. Then you find the packages in your Synaptic Package Manager, just the same as you find any others, and then uninstall same as any other packages. btw apt is just the CL package manager. Easy peasy.
How the maintainer will manage their own ppa at the time of xorg-server getting officially updated for the bug is up to them. If they're a good maintainer, you won't notice anything. If sh*t happens, go back to the maintainer for instructions. They will help.
Glad it's working for you. I got pushed off the net too early to update last night. Will have another try tonight.

I've just applied the Bryce Harrington patch.
It seems to have fixed the crash problem for me :-)

However , being a relative newbie, I'm not confident that I added the ppa in the approved manner.
I have only once before added a ppa, and on that occasion I added a line to Software Sources,
in the form:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xxx/ubuntu/lucid/main

I did the same this time as I wasn't sure what the apt commands were all about.
However it appears to have worked.

If I need to remove this patch, could anyone point me in the direction of some instructions.
Thanks.

but this solution is definitely sub-optimal since Ubuntu is a consumer-oriented distro :(
Wellll - ppa's are pretty much well established now - and the kind of user interested in NS would also be able to handle the Debian apt-get CL stuff. They are very easily installed - - - and uninstalled.
They are kind of analogous to the Moz addons repos, and a little trust inspection and care for your sources lets you patch the kernel when the Canonical folk are too busy, and to also get a little extra inventiveness outside the Official Repos. It certainly beats compiling for yourself :-))
Just giving the Ubuntu users' side :-)
This patcher has done a good job according to some other reviewers, and I might even get myself upgraded tonight and try running it.
The bug has been given a "low" priority :-/ Go figure, when Firefox is bundled.

It's definitely a X Window Manager bug (as you can see from the patch above), but it seems they've not fixed yet in the final Ubuntu release :(
Just to check if there's a work-around, does setting the noscript.stickyUI about:config preference to false help?

BTW, looks like you can apply the patch by yourself, but this solution is definitely sub-optimal since Ubuntu is a consumer-oriented distro :(

Similar thing happening here.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Firefox 3.6.3. NoScript 1.9.9.71

If I visit a website for the first time and click on the NoScript Options button to allow the site all is OK.
However if I click on the options button on a subsequent visit to the same site, then Gnome Desktop shuts down immediately, and restarts with the login screen.

Looks like there's already a patch: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserve ... 1131382868

Update: Note that crash just occurred with NoScript disabled. Using Cookie Monster. I no longer believe this is a NoScript issue but a Mozilla Add-On issue. Also, please note that I have edited the below for format (bold) and the last four lines which were displaced (out of order).

Preamble:
This happens in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. I have had this problem in Beta1, Beta2, and now the RC. I believe this to be an issue between NoScript and Xorg. This is repeatable in Kubuntu as well as Xubuntu. This does not happen in Linux Mint 8 Helena Xfce CE, nor does it happen in Debian 5.0.4 KDE. I no longer have Xubuntu Lucid Lynx installed so all troubleshooting will be done from Kubuntu Lucid Lynx, currently at RC development stage. This happens on two laptops: one with an nVidia card and one with an ATI card. I've tried new profiles, running with NoScript as the only extension (including disabling the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications).

Finally, I've listed bug reports with Ubuntu (Launchpad #551754) and KDE (Bugzilla #235084) but not yet with Xorg as I am assuming (for the moment) that the Ubuntu team will follow-up on Xorg (xorg-server, specifically) and do not wish to duplicate efforts needlessly. My reason for posting this here is to help identify the problem on the NoScript side. However, I personally have a fundamental problem with xorg-server being vulnerable to a crash from an application add-on.

FAQ-requested data:
This occurs everywhere, including http://noscript.net/

The steps needed to reproduce the error are to install (or run live CD?) the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx release candidate. This error occurs in Kubuntu and Xubuntu and seems to be an xorg-server crash based on troubleshooting.

Tools > Error Console shows... nothing related to noscript. In fact, there are no errors before or after the crash. The messages that appeared were there before the crash with at most duplicates of what was there, but again -- nothing related to noscript.

Software data:

NoScript 1.9.9.69

System data:
(Note, this also happens with the ATI Radeon M6 LY on another laptop, so this is not unique to nVidia).

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard.
Where did you install NoScript from?
Did you try on a clean profile with just NoScript installed from http://noscript.net/getit#devel ?

I just upgraded to gnome 10.04. I did a clean install, then copied my old home account over.
Right clicked the noscript icon and not only did the browser die, but my entire desktop session died, ended up back at the login prompt. Uninstalled noscript and reinstalled. same. Found that left clicking it does the same thing. I can left/right-click other icons down on the lower right of the browser window like 'greasemonkey', but they don't have any adverse effects. Disabled most of the other firefox plugins, but gnome killing behavior remains. Uninstalled noscript. Ran 'update' and 'locate noscript', there are no noscript files left in my home directory, it only found noscript files on my backup directory.
